Specialized Agencies
Specialized Agencies in Model UN refer to more technical, creative, or “specialized” committees (hence the name), and students may represent countries or characters. These committees are often smaller than GAs but require a more advanced understanding of Model UN and will often have modified rules of procedure.

The African Union is an international organization of 55 nations, launched in 2002, as the successor to the Organization of African Unity. It is based in Addis Ababa, the Capital of Ethiopia. Its general goal, laid out in the Constitutive Act of the African Union is to promote unity and cooperation between African nations, and to develop the continent economically. The African Union is an administrative giant, with countless different smaller political bodies. Examples include the Executive council, made up of a country’s foreign minister, Regional Economic Communities, aimed to promote economic integration between states, and the Peace and Security council, which makes decisions on issues pertaining to conflicts, and has peace support operations, similar to UN peacebuilding operations. It is up to member states to uphold the values of the Pan-African Union, and to ensure the fulfillment of the aspirations and hopes of people across the continent.

The Parliament of the United Kingdom is one of the oldest legislative bodies in the world, tracing its roots to the 13th century. You will be simulating the House of Commons, where representatives across the UK, from England to Northern Ireland, convene. It is the legislative body of Great Britain, with the ability to impose taxes, and controls the budget of the government. There are around 650 representatives in the House of Commons, each one representing a constituency inside Britain. You will be drafting bills and legislation that will be legally binding for the UK, unlike most UN resolutions. The House of Commons is a place of much debate, with debate on not only policy, but also the having question periods, where the opposition is able to attack the government on their handling of issues and raise concerns on certain problems. The House of Commons remains one of the major pillars of the democratic system in the UK, and whatever decisions you choose to make in this parliament will be recorded for generations to come.

Crisis Committees
Crisis committees are high-intensity, real-time simulations of major events, battles, or even fictional events. Crisis committees reflect both the fast paced nature of emergencies, while also providing a unique “backroom” mechanic to allow for students to interact with characters not present in the committee. These committees required a highly refined understanding of Model UN, and follow their own unique rules of procedure.

OxfordMUN Canada is proud to announce that it will be hosting a hyper-realistic, large scale military crisis simulation. In this committee, real-life military personnel will be present in both the front room and backroom, providing insight, commentary, and realism to the simulation.
Imagine a committee where you are pleading to a real-life general on the best course of action to save your troops. Simultaneously, in the backroom, an officer is evaluating your crisis note for it’s accuracy and effectiveness, and providing guidance to crisis staff on how to best respond to your request. Then comes marching in a drill sergeant with updates on a new devastating turn of events. Welcome to OxfordMUN’s most immersive crisis experience ever.

The Lord of the Rings, written by J.R.R Tolkien during the height of the Second World War from 1937-1949, was the defining book of the era. From a simple, quaint village in the heart of the Shire, a few small halflings, drawn reluctantly from their tranquil lives, would set out on a quest that would inspire countless works for years to come. Lord of the Rings is a book like no other- from the realism of the Dead Marshes, steeped in the horror and pestilence of the Battle of the Somme, a field of death that Tolkien experienced first-hand as a soldier in the First World War, to Hobbiton, a peaceful, happy village, reminiscent of Tolkien’s dreams of a utopia, shows the utter brilliance of the Lord of the Rings. OxfordMUN Canada is eager to run a Lord of the Rings committee, based upon the exceptional work of the Oxford professor, J.R.R Tolkien.
